Where is Bai Lang Kickboxing Academy located?

We are based in St Georges, Telford, on the Gower Street Trading Estate, TF2 9HW. The academy is easy to reach by car and public transport, with parking available nearby.

How do I get there?

We’re easily accessible by car, with parking available on-site. We’re located just off the main Gower Street, through the green gates into the Gower Street Trading Estate, between the two mini roundabouts. Public transport links are also available nearby. For detailed directions, feel free to contact us.

What should I wear for my first class?

Wear a T-shirt with shorts, joggers, or leggings — whatever you feel comfortable moving in. If it’s cold, a hoody is fine to start with during the warm-up. Training is done barefoot, so please remove shoes and socks before stepping onto the mats. Don’t forget to bring some water to stay hydrated!

What age groups do you cater for?

We welcome members from 4 years of age and up. Our classes are structured by age and experience, including dedicated sessions for kids, juniors, teens, ladies only, and mixed adults. This ensures everyone trains in a safe, suitable, and supportive environment.

Do I need experience to join?

Not at all! We welcome complete beginners through to experienced fighters. Everyone progresses at their own pace, and we pride ourselves on offering a supportive and structured path for all levels.

Do you do morning sessions?

We currently run Saturday morning sessions for kids, but when it comes to ladies’ or adult weekday morning classes, the answer is not at the moment. That said, it’s something we’re actively looking into, so please keep an eye on our social media for updates — it could be coming very soon!

Does the club break for holidays?

Yes. While we charge a monthly membership fee, it’s based on a 4-week month, meaning that over the year, 4 weeks are intentionally left unpaid. This allows us to close for 1 week at Easter, 1 week in summer, and 2 weeks at Christmas — all at no additional cost to you.

Are the classes contact or non-contact?

Most classes are non-contact and focus on technique, fitness, and pad work. We also offer controlled sparring in designated sessions for those who want to progress further — always with strict safety measures and supervision in place.

Do you do sparring?

Yes – sparring is available for members who are ready and wish to participate. It’s always controlled, supervised, and requires full protective gear to ensure a safe and constructive experience.

What if I have an injury or illness – can I still train?

Depending on the issue, we may be able to modify your training. Please speak with a coach before class and consult a healthcare professional if needed. Your health and safety come first.

How much do classes cost?

We offer monthly memberships based on how many sessions you train per week. The more sessions you sign up to, the better the value, as the hourly rate decreases with higher commitment. For full pricing details, get in touch or visit our website.

Do you offer Pay As You Go (PAYG)?

No – as a full-time martial arts academy, we’re focused on working with committed members who want real progress. PAYG tends to attract people who dip in and out, which disrupts class flow and adds unnecessary admin. More importantly, we don’t just run “a class here and there” — we teach to build skills, character, and change lives. Consistency is key to that journey.

What equipment will I need?

For your first few sessions, you only need basic sportswear and some water. We’ll provide gloves to borrow when you start. Once you join, you’ll receive a uniform as part of your membership. As you progress, you’ll need your own gloves, and if you choose to take part in sparring later on, you can gradually invest in basic protective gear like shin guards and a mouthguard. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Do you offer ladies-only classes?

Yes, we do! We run ladies-only classes in the evenings, providing a supportive and empowering environment for women of all levels. These sessions are designed to build fitness, confidence, and skill in a comfortable setting. Many women also train in our mixed classes, which are inclusive and welcoming to all.

Can I compete if I want to?

Yes! If you’re interested in competing, we’ll help you build the skills, fitness, and mindset needed. We start with interclubs and amateur open events, and as you develop, you can progress to evening gala shows and even international competition. We support all levels — from grassroots to strong national and international amateur fighters, and we also have a small team of professionals for those who want to take it all the way.

Do you offer private sessions?

Yes, but availability is very limited. Private sessions are mainly offered during the day due to our busy evening and weekend class schedule. Priority is given to our own members who want to level up, followed by individuals from outside the club who may have personal challenges to overcome before joining group classes, or those who are serious about progressing far in kickboxing. These sessions are not aimed at general fitness clients, but rather those looking for meaningful development.

How do I join?

Simply reach out via our website or social media, or contact us directly to book your first session. We’ll walk you through everything from there.

Is there a trial class?

Yes – we offer a 2-session paid trial. We charge for the trial because we’ve found that free sessions are often undervalued, and around 50% of people don’t turn up. The small fee covers admin and helps us focus on committed individuals, which is who we want in our gym.

During your trial, we’ll ensure you receive a world-class experience — including a warm welcome, a proper onboarding into the class, and dedicated time from our coaches to introduce you to the basics and make sure you feel confident.

What if I’m unfit or haven’t trained in years?

No problem! We’re here to help you improve no matter your starting point. Everyone trains at their own pace, and our coaches are here to support your journey. You’ll also find that our members are of all ages and abilities, and everyone gets on really well — it’s a friendly, welcoming environment where no one is left behind.

Can parents watch junior classes?

Yes – we have a viewing area, although space is limited. We welcome parents who want to support and see their child’s progress, as it helps build trust and confidence. However, distractions from the sidelines can sometimes impact focus, so we ask that noise is kept to a minimum.

That said, in many cases, leaving children to settle in without the distraction of parents can actually promote faster development, helping them build confidence and independence from the very start.

What is the Chief Instructor’s experience/background?

Lee Whitfield has been training in martial arts for over 30 years, and teaching for more than 20 years. He holds a 5th Dan Black Belt in Kickboxing, and represented Great Britain as an amateur before turning professional. As a pro, he won the English Muay Thai title, British K1 title, and the European Full Contact Kickboxing title. He is also a Hall of Fame award recipient, recognising his lifelong contribution to martial arts.

UPDATE...
My son and daughter have been attending for almost 3 years now. They have progressed so much over that time. My daughter absolutely loves it here and attends as many lessons as she can. My son has also upped his lessons, which was a big thing for him. They have both made many friends there and enjoy every second of every lesson. Kickboxing has helped improve their fitness, concentration, and has had a positive impact on their mental wellbeing and social skills. They come out of lessons with a smiles on their faces, also a little sweaty as they work hard. Lee is an amazing teacher/coach, who is always helpful and great with the children. Helping them progress and grow. Would highly recommend
